In the Unity sample, the cursor casts a ray each frame. First, against Unity’s colliders. Second, against the understanding module’s world representation. And finally, again UI elements. In this application, UI gets priority, next the understanding result, and lastly, Unity’s colliders. The SurfaceType is reported as text next to the cursor.

I’ve tested that and that’s true, there is some delay when using UnitySendMessage(), sometimes even more than a frame. Therefore, it might not be a good idea to use it to send data from Java to Unity that is critical to every frame.

A simple way to show live RGB would be to create a display surface in your UI and use Unity's webcamtexture instruction to stream RGB data onto that surface.
